MCKK Annual Sports Day,  Part 1

The Records…

This year’s MCKK Annual Sports Day will be held on Saturday, 21 June 2008 at 2.30 pm, and of course at the Big Field. I still remember those good old days in the 1970s, when we looked forward for this annual event—we were treated with goodies, including an apple and ice cream!  And of course the cheering for the respective houses was fun, especially when your house eventually emerged as champion.

Ever wondered what happened to those great athletes of MCKK? One person I recall was the 1974 champion cross country runner, Azahari Hussin, who was shot in Jakarta for involvement in JI bombings.  He was a great runner, but I didn’t expect him to still be on the run, 30 years after! May Allah bless his soul.

MCKK Annual Sports Day,  Part 2

The Sportsman of the Year, Victor Ludorum…

I wish I were good in sports, and had my name engraved on the plaque hanging in the Hargreaves Hall.  But I only managed to secure 5 high points during sports heats (that’s individual maximum, by the way) for Mohd Shah house, plus another 1 point for cross-country.  That was about it.  Blame it on the heavy balls and bums.

MCKK Annual Sports Day,  Part 3

The Champion House…

Ahmad house is not the greatest after all… And, come on, Prez Dato’ Seri Megat Najmuddin, don’t go around telling, “Sulaiman house is the greatest…during my time, it’s the champion house.”  Check the records.  Since post-war MCKK Sports Day from 1947 till 2007, Ahmad house has won only 15 times, just one time more than Sulaiman house.  Sulaiman house was strong for the first 5 years, being champions from 1947-1951 (perhaps Pak Ungku was still around in those early years…); but became champions only once during the 1960s—in 1966, after Dato’ Prez left college! Ha ha ha…

For Idris house, their outings were not that bad as we perceived—12 championships so far (unfortunately, there were last most of the rest of times!).

Now…the drum rolls, please… the most number of championships:  MOHD SHAH house, with 20 titles.  Steady Mohd Shah, steady aku.

MCKK's Early Days PDF Print E-mail

Day 1: The College opened, 2nd January, 1905. Only 8 students registered, with 3 staff, Mr. W. Hargreaves, Mr. F.A. Vanrenen, and Mr. C.W. Rowlands. Mr. Hargreaves, the first Headmaster, personally went around Kuala Kangsar to get enough enrollments for The Malay College to start.

Mr. Hargreaves went knocking at the doors of the palaces and chiefs’ houses to promote aggressively the Malay Residential School (as The Malay College was first known) for their children. The school, built in Kuala Kangsar was different then the already established Hogan School (later called Clifford School) about eight years earlier, which were open for all races. But this new school is for the Rajas’ and Chiefs’ sons, irrespective of age.
